Mets Top Phillies in Extra Inning Game 5-4

Nick Plummer went from anonymous reserve outfielder to a player who had a Mets moment Sunday night, helping his team emerge from a blown save by Adam Ottavino to celebrating a wild win.

Plummer tied the game with a mighty swing in the ninth and Eduardo Escobar’s 10th-inning double sent the Mets to a 5-4 victory and three-game sweep of the Phillies at Citi Field. The sweep was the Mets’ first this season.

“Pretty surreal,” said Plummer, whose 112-mph missile off the bat to the porch in right field against Corey Knebel leading off the ninth had a tinge of “Can you believe this?” attached to it.

The homer was Plummer’s first major league hit. It came on the 10th anniversary of the last Mets player blasting a homer for his first major league hit (also against the Phillies). Congrats if you guessed current Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner as the player who hit that home run.

Rangers Win Game 6, Top Hurricanes 5-2

The Rangers clearly are best with their backs against the wall.

On Saturday night, for the fourth time in these playoffs, they played a game in which a loss would have meant the end of their season. And for the fourth time, they came through with a victory.

Filip Chytil had two goals and Igor Shesterkin made 37 saves and had two assists as the Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-2, at Madison Square Garden in Game 6 of the teams’ second-round playoff series.

The Rangers forced a Game 7 on Monday night at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina.

“It didn’t surprise me,’’ coach Gerard Gallant said when asked about his team’s continued ability to capture must-win games in the postseason.

“I knew we’d come out hard and play well. We jumped on them early and that was key.”

Former NY Jet Frank Gore Wins Pro Boxing Match

Finished scoring touchdowns, Frank Gore scored his first professional knockdown. Or, rather, knockout.

Gore won his professional boxing debut Saturday by landing a right cross that knocked out Yaya Olorunsola, who fell to the canvas in the fourth round of the co-main event of Gamebred Boxing 1 in Mississippi.

Saturday also marked Gore’s 39th birthday, so he had another reason to bask in victory. Olorunsola, 29, is 0-2 in his career.

Gore previously boxed former NBA All-Star Deron Williams in an exhibition bout in December. After earning more than $62 million during a 16-year NFL career, he reportedly was paid $300,000 to fight Williams.

As he turns to his future, Gore leaves behind an NFL past that includes 16,000 career rushing yards. Only Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton ran for more.
