On a cloudy and cool afternoon in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the New York Jets defeated the Washington Commanders, 30 – 28.

The first half saw the Commanders collapse under an avalanche of ineptitude as the Jets took a commanding 27 – 7 lead into the locker room. 

Just when the Jets looked like they were going to put the final nail in the Commanders’ coffin, Trevor Siemian threw an interception. A few plays later QB Jacoby Brissett had the Commanders in the end zone and suddenly we had a football game with the score Jets 27, Commanders 14, as the momentum shifted to the Commanders.

Four minutes later the Commanders finished off another drive with a touchdown run and took a one point lead at 28 – 27. It was a stunning and humiliating turnaround, with the Jets vaunted defense unable to stop a mediocre Commanders offense.

Trevor Siemian drove the Jets just far enough for Greg Zuerlein to kick a game winning 54 yard field goal with five seconds left on the clock.

Carl Nassib, who made history as the NFL’s first openly gay active player, is retiring after seven seasons, he announced Wednesday.

The defensive end, 30, played in 99 regular season games for the Browns, Buccaneers and Raiders, recording 25.5 sacks, 187 tackles and four forced fumbles.

“Football has given me more than I ever could have imagined,” Nassib wrote in an Instagram post. “I can truly hang up my helmet for the last time knowing I gave it everything I had.”

The Browns made the 6-foot-7 Nassib a third-round pick out of Penn State in 2016. He played two seasons with Cleveland before joining the Buccaneers, where he turned in his best statistical years. His 6.5 sacks with Tampa Bay in 2018 were a career high, and he followed that up with six sacks and a career-best 34 tackles in 2019.

Nassib then spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Raiders before returning to the Buccaneers last year. He appeared in 13 games with Tampa Bay in 2022, recording 3.5 sacks.
