New Jersey Generals Get First USFL Win

It wasn’t pretty, but the New Jersey Generals picked up their first win in the new USFL on Friday night.

The Generals (1-1) held off the Michigan Panthers 10-6 at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Ala. in a game that was devoid of effective offense. Michigan fell to 0-2.

All 16 points were scored in the first half and both teams each missed a field goal.

Panthers quarterback Shea Patterson just missed engineering a game-winning drive in the final minutes.

Facing a fourth-and-20 from their 10-yard line, Patterson and the Panthers were able to keep the drive going and moved the ball all the way to the Generals’ 16-yard line with five seconds left. But Patterson, the No. 1 overall pick in the USFL draft, couldn’t finish the drive off as his final pass fell incomplete.

The former Wolverine signal caller struggled for most of the game, going 14-for-29 for 124 yards, in which 74 yards came in the final drive.

Max Scherzer Flirts With No-Hitter After Lindor’s Heroics

Citi Field has seen plenty of Max Scherzer, but for the first time on Tuesday night, he took the mound there as a Met. The right-hander didn’t take long to get the crowd of 27,490 hanging on his every pitch.

Scherzer flirted with throwing a no-hitter, recording two outs in the sixth inning before giving up his first and only hit of the game, and struck out 10 over seven innings to lead the Mets to a 3-1 win over the Giants on a cold night in Queens.

It completed a doubleheader sweep after Francisco Lindor secured his first walk-off as a Met for a 5-4 win in Game 1, improving Buck Showalter’s club to 9-3 with a strong start to a four-game series against the reigning NL West champs.

Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr Signs Huge Contract

The Las Vegas Raiders have made some big changes this offseason, but they proved that they are still very much committed to Derek Carr.

Carr and the Raiders have agreed to a three-year, $121.5 million contract extension. Carr had one more year left on his previous deal, so the new one ties him to Las Vegas through the 2025 season.

The new contract includes a no-trade clause.

Carr’s representatives have been working on a new contract with the Raiders since the start of the offseason.

Carr, 31, threw for 4,804 yards, 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season while leading the Raiders to the playoffs. He has to be thrilled with the way his offseason has gone.
